Q + A with Cinnamon during #isolation2020

5/20/2020

Picture
2020 has certainly changed the way we think about our lives. COVID-19 demanded us to isolate for an indefinite amount of time. This has inevitably led to much self evaluation, reassessment and business model adaptation on the run!

I thought it might be interesting to write down the answers to a few questions I have found myself being asked by a number of people over the past couple of months...…from an artist's perspective x …...I hope you enjoy xxxxx
Picture
How did you first react when the lockdown was announced?
We were in the middle of a large civic commission when this all started, so initially I was quite happy to lock myself away and get the job finished. Rowan was the one who suggested we had better stock up on steel and gas in case our suppliers needed to also close. Then we were concerned that the Galvanisers may close with our work still to be finished......luckily for us, the steel and welding industry was considered an essential service!
Picture
As an artist, were you impacted by the rapid cancellation of events?
I did have an exhibition I was involved with cancel, plus a local festival I was planning to have a market stall at...….but as I continued to receive emails about everything being cancelled, a piece of me actually felt relieved! I now knew that for the next unforeseeable time, I was going to be free to work in my studio....uninterrupted!
Rowan and I are fortunate to have an ongoing list of custom design projects. Normally I am juggling this work with other exhibition and promotional opportunities. The lockdown took all of this away.
The first thing I did was create this small range of cluster necklaces that I had had bubbling in my head for a little while....I now felt the freedom to release these little guys, and I called them my isolation series.
Picture
How did you adapt the way you do business?
I would have loved to lock myself away in my studio, but I was also very aware of staying visible to my clientelle. I did this via social media and my semi-regular e-newsletter.
I am also very involved with the local artistic community. I am the secretary of the Geelong Sculptors Inc (who's exhibition was one of the first to get cancelled) plus I am also the gallery assistant at Eagles Nest Gallery in Aireys Inlet.
So the first few weeks I went crazy trying to get everything online so I could help out those artists that didn't have any other means of selling their art all of a sudden! I put our sculpture exhibition online, with the help of another committee member, and then I started to upload local artists on the Eagles Nest Gallery website. This was a massive job...I did have some tech support and guidance, but it was a very intense up-skilling time for me.
Picture
What have you learnt through all this?
I definitely learnt a lot about myself and how I function under pressure. I think I am good at thinking on my feet, but sometimes I need to back off and let other people catch up. I tried to do to much for everyone else at the start of all this, and completely exhausted myself......but once I started taking some time out for myself, I found that I was better off focussing on my own family and studio. Since then I have found my creativity has expanded and I am a lot calmer.

We created this massive privacy screen for a private home. I am hugely proud of all the little nuances in the piece. Each panel has a unique set of differences and yet the whole piece flows like a story.
I actually finished this on my 50th birthday. I feel this is very significant, and I am proud of my skills as a designer, that can visualise what a client wants......sometimes while the client is still talking.
I think I have learnt to trust my own creative voice, and to be proud of what I have achieved.

What's next?
I encourage everyone to look at my website: www.cinnamonsart.com
To explore the Geelong Sculptors Inc online exhibition www.geelongsculptorsinc.com
and browse the new Eagles Nest Gallery website www.eaglesnestgallery.com.au (now open weekends)

I am currently designing a few projects that have come to me during isolation...…it seems that people are re-prioritising and are enjoying adding some art to their home sanctuaries xxxx
Sounds good to me x

NATURE GARDEN - 7m (plus extra) metalwork wall mural

Happy artists with part of Nature Garden on installation day!

We are very proud to announce the installation of this massive project. It has been 5 months in the making, and lucky to get to this final point with our current restrictions in place. Special thanks to Julie Brooks for steering the project, to Rowan for helping me through every stage and keeping the household running while I am distracted, and to our awesome install team, Brent and Rodney for putting this up today, while I made last minute changes!!!!
Picture

Mr. Spoonbill

Picture

Tree, Owl and secret ladybug....

The brief for this exterior wall of the City of Greater Geelong's second early learning and family centre in Drysdale, was to extend the same natural themes that we created at the Geelong centre, but to expand the tree into a garden.....
The tree, owl, daisy motifs and butterflies were a reflection of the artwork we completed at the end of 2019.
The garden concept grew to include the beautiful Drysdale lake with many examples of birdlife you regularly see.
Picture

The installation team checking out the ducklings

I enjoyed filling the design with hidden surprises for the children and families using the centre to discover.....a spider web, ladybug, owl and butterflies.....
Picture

Mr Swan and Mrs Duck

Here are a few images from my studio and skecth book to show the progress this project took.....
Picture

original concept sketch

Picture
I broke the 7m design down into 9 smaller sections. This allowed us to physically create them in our tiny studio, and also fit them in a van to transport them safely.
These sections also needed to make visual sense, and were actually complete compositions in themselves!
Picture

Dragonfly Magic

When creating an artwork of this size, for a building that was also being completed....challenges sometimes are needed to overcome. This was certainly the case on install day when we discovered that a security gate had been installed directly where my design was planned......after some quick on the spot re-designing, I decided to install this Dragonfly piece and the Chocolate Lilies on another section of wall that leads the viewer to the main piece!
In the end I was happy for this change, because I truly believe the main design would have been too busy, and it now has a perfect balance of space for the eye to rest!
Improvise, adapt and overcome!!!! x
Picture

Chocolate Lilies

These Lilies, along with the Knobby Reeds and the Bull rushes were all chosen for the design because of their inspiring shapes, and the fact that they are native flora of the Bellarine.
Having 7m plus to play with meant we wanted variety of design throughout.....
Rowan was a big reason these Lilies were made, and I love them! They may even feature in a mirror frame design in the future!
Picture

Duckling in progress

Picture

Rodney with a halo

Final words......NATURE GARDEN was also meant to capture the feeling of family and nurturing that this centre provides....The Duck leads her ducklings across the lake, Spoonbill and Swan watch on like guardians. The owl in the tree symbolises learning and the butterflies flutter off into the future full of hope and promise.
Thanks again to the COGG, and we look forward to what's next......

AXESS GLASS collaborative art awards 2020

2/18/2020

Picture
What an exciting way to end our clandestine creative efforts that started in November last year!
We WON the Axess Glass collaborative sculpture - aquisitive award
FOR NATURE'S SAKE - glass by Glenda MacNaughton/metalwork by us
Picture
We also won the
BEST IN SHOW - HIGHLY COMMENDED AWARD
with
THE WEEDY SEADRAGON MATING DANCE
Glass artist David Hobday - copper and rivets by us

David Hobday was the glass artist who first reached out to me, and I was very excited as I had been wanting to collaborate with him and his gorgeous coloured glass for a while. We started chatting about possibilities and design themes we had in common. As a marine biologist in his past, the ocean and its creatures is a theme close to David's heart. When he suggested sea dragons and sea weed I was hooked!
After our first design meeting the addition of Abalone shells in the bottom section of glass allowed me to express myself with spirals.

The challenge was going to be connecting the glass sections!
Picture
Picture

Before and After glass was added......

THE PROCESS
Back in November I was told about this new collaborative award that was being introduced at the Festival of Glass.
Designed to encourage glass artists to work with an artist who specialises in another medium.
The brief was that the balance needed to be 75% glass/ 25% other.

After I had begun the design process with David, I was approached by Glenda MacNaughton, who is another well known glass artist from the Bellarine. I was put in a tricky position, but decided to give David the decision seeing as he was first to ask me. David graciously allowed me to work on the two projects after I realised that the two artworks were going to be vastly different.

Glenda predominantly hand blows her flame heated glass, while David is best known for his kiln formed fused glass.
This also meant the two projects needed different approaches.
Picture
Let's not forget that Rowan and I were already booked up with festive season orders and commissioned work that had been waiting most of the year........so I was relieved to figure out that I couldn't start on David's copper connector pieces until he had created all of his glass sections! Glenda's piece on the otherhand, required me to create the entire plant stems, base and stamens BEFORE she could add any of her blooms and leaves!!!!! This was quite a challenge to envisage what and where her pieces would sit, while still allowing the end result to look quite natural and wind swept......
Picture
Picture
This is what my section looked like! LOL..... I really had to keep my imagination alive!
Picture
I was so impressed with how Glenda finished off the sculpture!
The colours in the glass and the attention to detail was remarkable xxxxx
It was an absolute pleasure to work with her
Picture
I am also happy to say that David was very impressed with the way we attached the Seadragons via my copper fins,
and the gorgeous rivetting work that Rowan devised xxxxx
I also loved working with David and am blown away by the detail he achieved in the sea dragons.

Overall, I was honoured to be asked to collaborate by these two remarkable glass artists, and I look forward to future collaborative projects with them xxx

Tree of Fun + Friends

12/13/2019

Picture
Picture
So this is how this large project unfolded........
Picture
We were contacted in August to see if we would be interested in designing and creating this large foyer sculpture. Of course I was very excited when they told me that this was to be a brand new building that would be catering for a number of family and child services. A survey had been done with the kids already using these services around Geelong, asking them what they loved most about their own smaller centres......the overwhelming responses were :
Playing outside in the trees with their friends and having fun!
Picture
I immediately saw this design in my mind and presented it to the City of Greater Geelong. They were equally as excited, so it was all systems go! The butterflies represented the friendships, the flowers and leaves could be dicovered and counted for fun, and the tree of life was the symbol of nature, growth and development.
Picture
Picture
We started working on the tree trunk in late October.....Rowan sourced some great pieces of twisted steel that were used to frame up the design. My plan was for a 3 dimensional trunk to "grow" up and around a very tricky bulkhead ceiling section, and then for the branches to spread across over head.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Rowan was able to create a template for us to use in order to get all the angles right. Once the tree trunk was created, we moved onto the 3 branch sections. We snuck in an owl that Rowan had created, as well as the leaves and flowers that were in the original design. I used my drawing on the studio floor method to create all these sections that needed to blend and grow together on site!
Picture
Picture
Picture
The final piece of my design puzzle was the butterflies.....these were hand designed and cut using a plasma cutter, then welded together using up-cycled bolts and drill bits as bodies and hand curled antennae. Rowan's suggestion of spacing the butterflies away from the branches helped the process as well as adding the 3 dimensional effect I was after!
Picture
Installation day came on December 13th! Brent and Rod were a fabulous team and respected my wishes to the millimeter......even when I wanted one final butterfly to be installed separately to symbolise the child leaving the Early Learning part of their life and moving confidently on in their future.
Picture
Picture
The centre is currently being completed, will be given an indigenous name, and will be open to the public in January 2020! We are very holured to be part of the design and are looking forward to creating more exciting art next year!

Blue Raven commission

2/16/2018

Please enjoy some extra information about this moving project. It was a magical experience.........
Picture
Picture
Ziggy, my client, was one of the many people who lost everything in the Separation Creek/Wye River fires on Christmas day 2015. Ironically I had known the builder of her home, and was aware that it was clad in copper sheets. An unusual cladding choice, but one he felt would be fire resistant.......a couple of house owners later, Ziggy wasn't so lucky!
Picture
Ziggy contacted me in 2016, to ask me if I could bring some life to her two sheets of badly burnt and mangled copper that she had salvaged from her block. We spoke for some time, and immediately I felt a connection to her hilarious dry humour and her emotional story. It wasn't until mid 2017 that we caught up in person and I was given the copper to consider. The rich colours and the extra - twice burnt - malleability was very inspiring!!!
Picture
Ziggy has a passion for Ravens, so I went to work designing a worthy spirit messenger bird to represent the past emotions giving way to a more positive future......a long and challenging process, with many sketches flowing to and fro between client and artist!!!
Picture
The text and font required for the sign to go under the Raven was a much easier process. I was excited to have a client that shared my love for Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Art Nouveau) inspired font........Ziggy was considering using the words Stark Raven!!!!.......The feathers were a later addition, a creative way of using up the copper off cuts......
Picture
Rowan developed the beautiful red glass eye from my original sketches. This became one of the most attractive parts of the design, especially located in front of the Silver Birches at this time of the year.....this was a magical result, as I had not visited the site until installation day!

The patching look of the copper was done by choice, as I wanted it to look salvaged and cobbled together. Ziggy loves this as she is an avid decoupage artist.

Ironically, the re-purposed circle that the Raven is flying across (representing the moon)  came to us during the time of this project......and was originally a fire pit frame!!!!!
Picture
Picture
The extra feathers was a creative way of ensuring that all of the large off cuts of Ziggy's precious copper went into the project!!!
Some went on the sign, while others were made into hanging mobiles for her to hang around her new home. Incidentally Zig was able to start over again in an incredible home and property deep in the Otways, far from the "slow ocean road"
Picture
Picture
Picture
During this project we had a bumper year in the studio, with many commissions, exhibitions and Christmas orders pushing Blue Raven down the list.......this was unfortunate at the time, but now after delivering and installing the piece and experiencing a much happier client than the one we first met....I truly believe the extra time was necessary in the healing process. xxxxxx

At the time though, Ziggy's patience was weighing heavily on me.........then I had a thought of a magical gift to not only say Thank you but to also help promote her healing........
Picture
Feather Healing ....... this necklace contains feathers created from the salvaged copper,
copper fittings and a special Ruby Malachite crystal xxxxx (she is wearing it in the first image of this blog)

Ziggy, it was an honour to work with you on this project.

Choosing my current creative metalwork mediums of copper and welded steel, I have also been collaborating with fellow sculptor Dani Salvo of @bemykeeper using some inspiring pieces of porcelain. Beach glass has also been an inspiring medium.....
Picture
Picture
I have been having fun being able to wear all these new creations, but you are most welcome to own a bespoke piece of Cinnamonsart Jewellery......I will be adding a page on my website soon, and you can follow my creations on instagram @cinnamons_art plus you can contact me through facebook or my website.......

Leaves - this is my latest creation......quite an adventurous piece including 6 welded steel leaves and a focal Celtic inspired copper and steel leaf hanging in the centre. All held together by a steel twig with copper fittings.
I'm having lots of fun in this miniature sculpture world.....all created in between other larger metalwork projects and exhibitions......stay tuned for another busy year in 2018 xxxxx

Words from the Birds and Blooms exhibition opening!!!!

Something magical happened at the Art Space during our opening last Friday night.......
Picture
Acclaimed professional writer, Janet Brown was invited to say a few words inspired by our exhibition, this is what she wrote and performed to an amazed and appreciative audience........please enjoy x

A Fairy Tale for Grown ups - Peacock Tango
You know that saying - nothing good happens after 2am? It’s time to go home? Last night at 2.17am to be precise, something good, something special, something kinda weird  was happening here, on the Great Ocean Road. Here in Anglesea. Here at the Artspace. The moon, slung low and full was hovering above the Anglesea River. Reflected in the gentle waves. And those images bounced to the wet road and the broad windows of the gallery. Reflections of reflections of reflections. Exponential dimensions. The darkness of the gallery transformed into a silvery brightness, and, with the haunting sounds of Paul McCartney  - Cinnamon had been playing the Beatles during the afternoon - he was still echoing from the walls… strains of  a song about a bird, a song about waiting, a song about arising.

Picture
As though prompted, on cue, the ringmaster, Sitting Pretty, his elegant plumage shining in the lime-light of the moonglow, orchestrated the dance.
She’d been watching him for days, that woman there, on the barstool. All her cheeky cheeks, her white curves brazenly displayed. She’s a show off, that one. And so is he.  A meeting of the minds? More than that.
Picture
He moves to her, such grace, introduces himself… and his intent... with a long, slow stroke of a single feather from her neck down to her toes. She remains still, refuses to move for the Moon In Peacock, but she raises one eyebrow, tilts her chin and she says ‘Shall we dance?’
The peacock, his plumage steel and gold all a-rustle, unfurls his grand curtain of feathered shiny colour – delicious turquoise, orange, gold: she’s just the type of woman he wants. ‘I thought you’d never ask.’ An irresistible twinkle in his blue eyes. He takes her hand. The master.
Picture
The beautiful Vancouver birds have travelled so far in Anticipation of a mysterious adventure Downunder. From their Vantage Point they see this moment – it’s just a moment – a kind of stretched out moment, but not a minute, not something you can time, not with a watch - they chirp and whisper – ‘Such goings on in this place. Don’t see that in Vancouver!’ The little innocents are agog, if birds can be agog.
Picture
Mr Cool, over near the corner, he knows exactly what’s going to happen. Snappy dresser – all full of himself in his best white suit, red hat, red tie and if he gets a chance, he’ll join in. But for the moment, he’s watching, taking it all in, pretending disdain.
Woman says ‘Cheek to cheek?’
Peacock croons ‘Tango’.
She says ‘Tango? A bird who can tango?’
He says ‘I’ll lead.’
She smiles.
It’s On.
And they dance. They dance that dance where there’s no past and no future. That dance where there’s only the moment.
Picture
The elegant, mysterious, blue cloaked woman with her beautiful black face so inscrutable -  Bird Bowl Harvest - shimmies ever so slightly, irresistibly imitating them, her head bowl swaying in rhythm. Some of her face-framing blooms gently release their petals and they spill to the silver blue floor, cast like confetti for the dancers.
The swan and the spoonbill keep a respectful distance. Such antics are foreign to them. But they exchange a frisson of delight with the masqueraded creatures and a familiar nod to those ‘others’ all dressed up in their fancy finery and their curly, bird accessorised head dresses: it IS a special occasion.
The tango can be different things to different peop… ‘beings’, but at its heart it’s a language of embrace. It’s about desire and these two, these two….

They move as one. She absorbs him. They become each other. Everyone sees it happen.
He whispers to the shell of her ear ‘I have something for you, my love.’ Taking liberties.
She says ‘Something else?’
He says, ’Yes, a ring, a token of my affection.’
She pats his handsome head ‘An owl and a pussy cat and a runcible spoon: can you possibly improve on that?’

Picture
As he kisses her hand, slips the ring onto her finger - silver shiny, shiny.
He sings as only a peacock can sing at 2.17am ‘It’s cast from a found seagull’s thigh bone. One who once danced on the wind.’
She gasps – ‘Oh!’ - and says to the shiny ring, “I’d so love to have wings. Imagine, flying.’ They nestle closer, they envelop, they adore, they consume each other.
Then, the light changes, everything now different. The moment of Mesmer has passed. With a shiver of his arc of eyed plumes, he reluctantly retreats from her curves and returns to his wheel of fortune. Still.

She, quite rapturously adorns a new canvas, changed, all plumaged legs with iridescent eyes and… satisfied.
Everything, everyone, now still.
And in the air there lingers, I’m sure it lingers…listen…Something about a special moment. Something about being free.
